Dr ken Wayne, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Calgary has 30 years experience in this field of medicine helping patients overcome depression, was here to answer some of your common questions about depression causes. This is what he had to say.

Can depression cause erectile dysfunction?

Studies show that 35 to 47 percent of people with depression have problems with their sex life, 61 percent of people with severe depression have sexual problems, and up to 40 percent of people taking common antidepressant medications report a decline in sexual satisfaction.

The sexual urge that causes you to have an erection starts in your brain. When there aren’t enough brain chemicals to stimulate the blood flow needed for an erection, erectile dysfunction results. Depression causes these brain chemicals to get out of balance, and that can mean you have less desire for sex — and you can’t perform well. Depression can cause ED even when a man is completely comfortable in sexual situations. Drugs used to treat depression may also cause ED.

Can depression cause weight loss?

Yes, depression can cause one to loose weight. I remember when I was out of work and desperately looking for a job, I lost so much weight I had to re-adjust my trousers' waists. Everyone kept commenting how much I had lost weight which didn't help much. Depression has a number of symptoms. However, some people do not recognize that they have depression. They may feel low and not right, but cannot say why, and even think of it as just normal for them. Many people with depression can hide their true feelings from friends and family. Weight loss may develop due to not eating much. It is sometimes friends or family who may actually notice that a person has lost weight and it then turns out to be due to depression.

Can genetics cause depression?

Genetic influences are most marked in patients with more severe forms of depressive disorder and biological symptoms.The morbid risk in first-degree relatives is increased in all studies, this elevation being independent of the effects of environment or upbringing.In less severe forms of depression, genetic factors are less significant and environmental factors relatively more important.

Does nutrition cause depression?

Refined foods, margarine and standard oils containing trans-fatty acids and additives rob the body of nutrients. Food allergies also cause depression in some people. A diet of raw foods and whole grains is most important for energy needed by the body and the mind so as to fight depression. White bread, flour and pasta together with saturated animal fats and hydrogenated vegetable oils, sweets, soft drinks and canned goods deplete the body of B vitamins.

  • Borage is one of the most effective and natural antidepressants. Juice from borage leaves and blossoms exerts a specific stimulating effect on the glandular system, which helps to overcome the "blue" feeling. Suggested as a remedy for melancholy, it stimulates, energizes and renews a zest for life. The young leaves can also be used to make a refreshing salad.
  • Crush cloves and add to sage, camomile or peppermint tea to lift mild depression. Add a dash of ginseng powder, which also acts as an antidepressant.
  • St. John's wort juice is a nerve tonic for depression and nervous exhaustion caused by excess strain. Anxiety and insomnia are relieved with St. John's wort juice, particularly when taken in conjunction with valerian and lycopus juice. Take 1 tbsp. of juice or 1 cup of tea, 3 times daily for 3-4 weeks to brighten mood.
