Herbs and their uses

Herbs and their uses are categorized according to their healing properties. Here are some of the herbs I frequently use together with their properties.

Antibacterial herbs and their uses

Uses:Cures or prevents the action and multiplication of harmful bacteria

Herbs: sage,calendula, myrrh, wild indigo, hyssop, thyme and eucalyptus.

Antibiotic

Uses: inhibits or destroys growth of disease; destroys bacteria, protozoa and viruses

Herbs: echinacea, myrrh, nasturtium,garden cress, mustard seed (only when mixed with warm water)

Adaptogen

Uses: improves the ability to adapt, or to deal with stress

Herbs: Ginseng, Dong quai and gotu kola(for adrenal stress response);hawthorn(for the heart);bitter herbs(for pancreas and liver support); yarrow(for liver support)

Analgesic

Uses: relieves pain

Herbs:St John's wort, Devil's claw, aconite

Anesthetic

Uses: kills pain

Herbs: butterbur, tea tree oil, willow bark, dong quai

Anti-carcinogenic

Uses: prevents or delays tumor formation.

Herbs: mistletoe, chaparral.

Antidepressant

Uses: prevents, cures or alleviates mental depression.

Herbs: St John's wort, hops, borage

Antifungal

Uses:deters fungal growth

Herbs: tea tree oil, calendula, thyme, echinacea

Antiviral

Destroys or inhibits growth of a virus; St John's wort, echinacea

Anti-inflammatory

Suppresses inflammation: Devils claw, horsetail, camomile, eyebright, white willow bark.

Antiseptic

Helps the body withstand infections:echinacea, myrrh, calendula.

Antispasmodic

Uses:Relieves muscular cramps or spasms:

Herbs:St John's wort, valerian, lemon balm, peppermint.

Aperitif

Uses:stimulates the appetite.

Herbs:wormwood

Aphrodisiac

Herbs and their uses: increases sexual desire: Ginseng

Astringent

Herbs and their uses: causes contraction, tightening and firming of tissue

Herbs:witch hazel, sage, oak bark, eyebright, yarrow

Bechic

Uses:Soothes coughs

Herbs: licorice root, thyme, coltsfoot

Biocatalyst

Uses:Activates or accelerates metabolism

Herbs: watercress

Carminative

Uses:Relieves flatulence

Herbs: peppermint, fennel, yarrow, camomile,ginger.

Cardiotonic

Uses:Increases tonicity(elasticity) of the heart

Herbs: foxglove, ginseng

Choloretic

Uses:Stimulates the production of bile

Herbs; dandelion, wormwood, artichoke.

Depurative

Uses:Purifies the blood

Herbs: Stinging nettle, birch, sage.

Diuretic

Uses:Promote the elimination of water from the body by increasing the excretion of urine

Herbs: horsetail.

Emollient

Uses:Soothes irritations and inflammations; softens, soothes and protects the skin

Herbs: marsh mallow, borage, coltsfoot, plantain, chickweed, fenugreek, comfrey, balm of gilead.

Expectorant

Uses:Promotes the expulsion of pulmonary secretions.

Relaxing expectorant;Herbs; Lungwort, marsh mallow, plantain,

Stimulating expectorant;Herbs: thyme,, coltsfoot, licorice, daisy, balm of gilead, white horehound.

Emmenagogue

Uses:Regulates and facilitates menstrual flow; uterine stimulant

Herbs; blue cohosh, dong quai, mugwort, calendula.

Febriuge

Uses:Counteracts or normalizes fever

Herbs: borage, elderflowers, lindenflowers, yarrow.

Hepatic

Uses:Enhances liver function

Herbs: dandelion root, artichoke, milk thistle.

Hypertensive

Uses:Causes an increase in blood pressure

Herbs: Kelp, hyssop, rosemary

Hypoglycemant

Uses:Causes a decrease in blood sugar level

Herbs: stinging nettle, goats rue.

Hypotensive

Uses:Decreases blood pressure

Herbs: mistletoe, fennel.

Laxative

Uses:Loosens the bowels and relieves constipation

Herbs: butternut bark, buckthorn bark, fresh blueberries, cascara sagrada.

Mydriatic

Uses:Enlarges the pupil

Herbs: tansy, greater prickly lettuce, deadly nightshade.

Pectoral

Uses:A remedy for the chest

Herbs: lungwort, marsh mallow, fennel.

Purgative

Uses:A laxative with a violent action to be used only for serious constipation

Herbs: senna, castor oil, cascara sagrada.

Polyvalent

Uses:Cures many different ailments

Herbs: camomile.

Stimulant

Uses:Stimulates or temporarily increases the activity of an organ or some vital process

Herbs: cayenne, caffeine, watercress, parsley, ginger, mustard, wormwood, yarrow, sage, pennyroyal, horseradish.

Sudorific

Uses:Promotes sweating

Herbs; lindenflowers, elderflower, camomile, ginger, cayenne, yarrow.

Tonic

Uses:Stimulates or restores vigor to the body or an individual organ

Herbs: borage, Siberian ginseng.

Vermifuge

Uses:Expels or kills intestinal worms

Herbs: garlic, black walnut.

Vulnerary

Uses:Promotes the healing of wounds

Herbs: comfrey,chickweed, elder, calendula, St John's wort.
